Souda camp on the Greek island of Chios. Conditions in Souda camp were dire particularly for people who as a result of overcrowding slept in tents exposed to low temperatures and heavy rain. Many refugees including vulnerable families slept in tents next to the beach. The refugees interviewed spoke of a lack of heating or insufficient heating and hot water and their security fears stemming either from fights between different nationalities or racist attacks by members of far-right groups on Chios. The majority of people stranded in Chios arrived after the 20 March 2016 following the implementation of the EU Turkey deal which foresees the return of refugees to Turkey. While their asylum claim is reviewed they are not allowed to leave the island. More than 4,000 refugees and migrants are stranded on the island, the majority living in dire conditions.

USA: Trump’s policy decisions blocking refugees puts hateful rhetoric into action

An estimated 1,200 refugees and migrants sleeping rough in abandoned warehouses in central Belgrade. The conditions seen by Amnesty International are inhuman and current winter temperatures reaching -20 C expose them to serious risks of illness. At the time of AI's visit, the Serbian authorities are failing to provide them with adequate food, water and sanitation, healthcare, appropriate clothing and basic accommodation.

People are forced to light fires and burn branches and scrap materials, including plastics they collect to keep warm, creating toxic fumes and threatening further injuries and fire in the warehouses. Unaccompanied children, as young as 11 represent a quarter of the population in the warehouses.

Slovenia: Blatant proposals to strip refugees and asylum-seekers of their rights must be rejected

Majd and Manal are a Syrian couple who fled Aleppo with their two daughters, Luna (age 15) and Dana (age 10). Majd was a factory owner and Manal, a university professor of technical dentistry. Their son Jude who is 20 years old, is already a recognized refugee in Germany. The family is afraid they may be returned to Turkey despite having family in Europe.

The family fled the horrors of the war in Syria and faced more danger when they attempted to cross to Turkey. ‘We lost everything …One day, my son saw a bomb coming from the sky and landing in the neighborhood and the glass fell on him… At that point we decided to move… The second time, we managed to cross the Turkish border, at the time the Turkish police started to shoot us and some of us died… nine of (our group) died’.

The family arrived on the island of Chios, the day that the EU-Turkey deal came into effect, on 20 March 2016. They remained in detention on Chios and on Leros refugee camps nearly 60 days and then could not leave Leros until the end of September despite the fact that doctors had referred Manal for hospital tests to Athens. Once in Athens they were not offered a shelter by the authorities. However, a Greek couple and their son who they met on Chios welcomed the family into their house.

“We did not come to Europe to steal food from people, to take job, to make problems. We came here because we are looking for a safe place… This is the heart of Europe and we (refugees) are living in tents and we do not have protection…..”, said Majd

Mahta* [pseudonym] is an Iranian woman who fled her country with her husband and her two children because of religious persecution. The family has been on Nauru for three years.

[The Australian authorities] were saying once we get our refugee status, we will move to the community, and then to a third country, but it could take one to five years, and they wouldn’t say which country. After 11 months, we got our refugee status, we were happy initially, but then it turned out to be even worse.

The school is worse than in the camp, it’s not really a school – it just has the name. As a mother, this hurts me most that our children cannot get normal education. They don’t give textbooks to refugee children, only to Nauruans. We have to force kids to go to school.

We don’t have our own transport so we have to walk everywhere. I can barely go outside on my own. I was on the road once, and a guy gave me a ride on his motorbike. He tried to take me to the “jungle” [forest] – I understood he was doing something wrong and jumped off, and hurt myself.

There are also no jobs here. I got a job in a shop. But other employees started touching my body, doing bad things to me, so I left after two hours.

Another time, I got a ride with a guy, and he offered me a “government job” – in exchange for “staying with him” – [meaning in exchange for sex].

Is it a crime to seek asylum? Maybe it’s “illegal” to come by boat, but do we deserve to be confined here for three years for this?
