This year’s Write for Rights cases are all about protest.
Throughout history, protest has been a powerful tool for change. But governments around the world are cracking down on protests and restricting people’s rights. People like those featured in this year’s Write for Rights campaign, all of whom have paid a great price for speaking truth to power.
Luis is a self-taught Black Cuban artist who is being denied healthcare by state officials after protesting. Chow was arrested after holding a candlelight vigil in Hong Kong. Shahnewaz was arrested for a Facebook post in Bangladesh. Protests across the world have been met with obstructive, repressive and often violent responses by state authorities. It’s time to stand up and loudly remind those in power of our right to protest.
