Ireland: Amnesty International welcomes Marriage Equality Referendum wording

21st January 2015, 11:37:13 UTC

Amnesty International welcomed the publishing by the Government of the wording of the Marriage Equality Referendum today.

Amnesty International’s global position is that states should end discrimination against LGBT people in civil marriage laws.

Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland said: “This referendum will present the Irish people with an opportunity to vote to end discrimination in Ireland’s civil marriage laws. At its heart then, this referendum  is about equality and about love. It is about about whether or not the Ireland of 2015 believes that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender women and men, have an equal right to have their relationships protected and cherished on an equal footing as their straight brothers and sisters.”
