The region of northeast British Columbia in Canada is rich in energy resources, but while some people enjoy enormous benefits, others are further marginalized and impoverished. The model of resource development is both fuelling violence and increasing vulnerability to violence. Government has failed to allocate sufficient resources to services necessary to meet the needs. Indigenous peoples whose lands and resources provide the basis for the wealth generated in the region, are excluded from a meaningful role in decision-making and bear a greater burden, including disproportionately high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls.
