An estimated 3,500 human rights defenders have been killed since 1998.

A coalition of national and international human rights organisations, on a joint project initiated by Front Line Defenders, have created an online memorial and database that commemorates all human rights defenders killed since the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

The Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Memorial was launched by President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins on 24 November in Dublin.

For the first time ever, there will be a dedicated resource dedicated to showing a true picture of the scale of killings of HRDs worldwide. The HRDs Memorial will celebrate the lives and achievements of inspirational people who were killed because they worked peacefully for the rights of others. It will also document the horrific scale of this phenomenon and the almost total failure to bring those responsible to justice.
