Panusaya (“Rung”) Sithijirawattanakul

Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul, known as Rung, is a 22-year-old Thammasat university student and pro-democracy activist who is one of the pioneers calling for structural reform of society and monarchy in the 2020-2021 movement. Rung has been prosecuted on multiple and severe criminal offences, including sedition,, violations of the Emergency Decree and Computer Related Crime Act, organising illegal assemblies, allegedly threatening officials, and insulting the monarchy. Nine allegations have been pressed against her in relation to Rung’s critique of; the monarchy, the monarchy’s status under the 2017 Constitution Law, the monarchy’s private army, the monarchy’s fiscal and activities interfering with the state’s sovereignty, and the rule of law. Rung faces punishment of up to life imprisonment i The youth reform movement held mass, overwhelmingly peaceful protests and flash mobs during 2020 and into 2021 for political, constitutional and educational reform, LGBTQI equality and women’s and children’s rights. After protesters publicly discussed calls for reform to the monarchy, authorities detained and charged dozens of peaceful protesters.
