Amnesty expresses condolences to the le Brocquy family

April 25 2012

Speaking on behalf of the members and staff of Amnesty International Ireland the organisation’s executive director, Colm O’Gorman, has expressed the movement’s sorrow at the passing of long-time supporter Louis le Brocquy, one of Ireland’s greatest artists.

Mr le Brocquy’s mother, Sybil, was one of the founding members of Amnesty International Ireland and over the years Mr le Brocquy generously donated a number of original works to the organisation.
Most recently, in 2008, he produced a new work for Amnesty International to celebrate 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Colm O’Gorman said: “Our thoughts and sympathies today are with Louis le Brocquy’s wife Anne, his sons Pierre and Alexis.
“Throughout an artistic career characterised by innovation and genius, Louis le Brocquy retained a passionate commitment to people facing persecution and to doing what he could to support those struggling against oppression in the world’s darkest corners.
“He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and by those of our members and staff who had the privilege to work with him over the years.”
