Hundreds of thousands of Argentinian citizens have been taking to the streets to support a bill that would decriminalise abortion in Argentina and guarantee women’s access to safe abortion. On June 14, 2018, public opinion won and the Chamber of Deputies in Argentina took a historic step forward for the rights of women and girls by voting in favour. The bill will now pass to the Senate.
Abortion in Argentina has been severely restricted since 1921 and is only permitted in very limited circumstances. Even in those limited circumstances, women and girls continue to face multiple obstacles accessing legal abortions.
Criminalizing abortion does not stop abortion from happening, it only makes abortion less safe. Half a million women undergo clandestine abortions every year in Argentina and, since 1983, over 3,000 women have lost their lives because they could not access safe abortion. In 2013 alone, 49,000 women were admitted to public hospitals for abortion-related health complications. The Argentinian Senate now has a momentous opportunity to put an end to these injustices by also voting in favour of the bill. People are already mobilising in huge numbers across Argentina to put pressure on their elected representatives. We need to show these legislators that the world is watching.
Add your voice to the movement in Argentina demanding an end to this cruel and unjust situation. Sign our petition calling on Senators in Argentina to listen to their citizens and support women’s access to safe abortion.
