On March 14, 2018, human rights defender Marielle Franco, 38 years old, was killed in Rio de Janeiro, while she was returning from an event that she was speaking at. Anderson Pedro Gomes, 39, her driver, was also killed in the attack.
Marielle was a tireless human rights defender in Rio de Janeiro. Before being elected councillor, she denounced human rights violations against black youth, women and LGBTI people. She also worked against abuses committed by the security forces, including extrajudicial executions.
Threats and attacks against human rights defenders in Brazil are pervasive. The response of the authorities has been inadequate and many perpetrators have not been brought to justice. We cannot let this happen again.
Demand the Brazilian authorities thoroughly investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
