Join the mexico group
Amnesty International Irish Section has been working on Mexico as one of its priority countries for many years. The Working Group on Mexico was set up in early 2005 by Amnesty volunteers to organise activities and campaigns around issues relating to Mexico. This group works from Galway.
To date our activities have included:
- Several meetings with Mexican diplomatic representatives to express our on-going concern at the human rights situation there and to make them aware of individual cases which AI has adopted;
- A march to the Mexican embassy and the presentation of a letter and petition to embassy staff;
- A film night in Film Base in Temple Bar to show Defending the Forests, The struggle of the Campesino Environmentalists of Guerrero, a film about environmental activism in Guerrero State;
- A conference in Dublin with invited speakers from Chihuahua and Guerrero. Our two speakers then did a tour of the country addressing meetings in Clonakilty, Cork City, Letterkenny and Dundalk;
- Letter writing on various prisoner of conscience and concern for safety cases in Mexico.
- A street demonstration in Galway to raise awareness about the plight of the disappeared women in Ciudad Juarez on the Mexican border.
If you would like to get involved we meet twice a month in Galway City and welcome new members enthusiastically! Contact us on mexicogroup@amnesty.ie
