This campaign digest focuses on the lives of pregnant women and their babies in Hopley settlement are in danger because of the Zimbabwean government's failure to ensure access to adequate housing and essential services, including health care. About 5,000 people live in Hopley settlement where conditions are dire. Amnesty International considers that preventable deaths of newborns at Hopley are a result of government failure to provide effective remedies for the victims of 2005’s forced evictions and failure to ensure pregnant women and girls have access to essential maternal and newborn health care. These failures constitute violations of the rights to health and to an adequate standard of living
