Thirst for Justice - Day of action update
Amnesty International members were out in force on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday weekend in cities across the country to raise awareness about water rights for Palestinians.
Many thanks go out to all the people who gave up their Saturday afternoon to brave the bad weather for what was a very successful Day of Action in Dublin, Cork, Clonakilty and Galway. Bottles of dirty-looking water were used to show passers-by what life is like for the thousands of Palestinians living in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) who have no access to clean water.
Thank you also to everyone who has donated towards our latest appeal for Water rights for Palestinians. We've raised an amazing €40,000 so far and it's increasing daily.
We couldn't do our vital work without your support - DONATE NOW
Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet in the OPT:
- 180-200,000 West Bank Palestinians have no access to running water
- 90-95 percent of the only water resource in Gaza is unfit for human consumption
- One third of the available water is lost through leakage
- 80 percent of groundwater is used by Israel
Amnesty International is calling on the Israeli government to ensure Palestinians get a fair share of the water supply. Currently Israelis consume four times as much water per person as the Palestinian community does.
