Syria solidarity vigils in Dublin and Galway

10 February 2012

Amnesty International Ireland is holding vigils in solidarity with the people of Syria in Dublin and Galway tomorrow, Saturday 11 February.

The vigils will take place at 12 noon at the GPO on Dublin's O'Connell Street and in Galway's Shop Street.

They will be followed by a minute's silence for the more than 5,000 people killed since protests began in Syria in March 2011.

Noeleen Hartigan, programmes director for Amnesty International Ireland, said: "Human rights were at the heart of the demands for change in the Middle East and North Africa that led to the extraordinary events of the last year. Tomorrow marks exactly a year since the fall of the Murabark government.

"But right now the Syrian military is shelling Homs. In makeshift hospitals across the city doctors are struggling to help the injured and dying with dwindling medical supplies.

"Russia's decision to veto last weekend's UN Security Council resolution was a betrayal of the people of Syria. This weekend, as part of an Amnesty Global Day of Action, we are gathering in public places around the world to show our solidarity with people in Syria and across the region who are standing up to brutal repression with courage and dignity, to show them that they do not stand alone."

Take action now. Demand that Russia acts to defend the Syrian people.
