Youth and Student Intern

Do you have an interest or experience in human rights? Are you enthusiastic and flexible? Amnesty International may be looking for you! Amnesty International Irish Section are seeking a Student and Youth Intern to work with our Human Rights Education Team.

Promoting Human Rights in Ireland
Amnesty International (AI) Irish Section works to advance and promote human rights in Ireland. In 2010 we will be undertaking activities such as research, training, seminars and conferences. In addition we will also be working specifically with a number of select organisations to develop their understanding of the human and their capacity to use and apply them. Our intent is to promote and advance the human rights based approach in Ireland through sharing our expertise, skills and knowledge. The Human Rights Intern will work on a variety of related projects and tasks, decided upon in conjunction with Amnesty staff.

Hours of work: 20 hours a week
Duration: Three to six months
Reports to: Youth and Student Officer
Deadline: 5pm Friday, July 16 2010

Main tasks:
These would be decided in conjunction with the HRE team on the basis of needs of section and experience, competencies and interests of intern/volunteer but could include:

  • Assistance with event management.
  • Promoting and updating materials related to the Junior and Youth Urgent Action Networks.
  • Familiarisation with Amnesty’s Youth and Student Network, plans and programmes.
  • Regular update of the Student and Youth pages on the Amnesty International Web page.
  • Maintaining database and records of affiliated Youth and Student groups and updating, and acknowledging new affiliations, actions and fundraising activities.
  • Responding to information requests from secondary school students and teachers and from the non-formal education network.
  • Arranging for speaker representation in schools and colleges and possibility of speaking at schools regarding Amnesty’s work.
  • Assistance with design and delivery of workshops as required.

Skills Required:

  • Understanding of and interest in human rights issues
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team in a dynamic and busy work environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Fluent speaker and writer of English
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet
  • Experience in the production of creative material for young people.
  • Keen interest in and/or experience in working with and for young people
  • Experience of youth activism not essential but considered an advantage
  • Experience of project management not essential but considered a plus
